Friday night free-for-all - Anne Marie Winston (far left), whose most recent book in the Logan's Legacy series, The Homecoming, hit bookstore shelves in May, moderates a lengthy panel of editors and agents. This year's participants included (left to right): Tracy Farrell, executive editor of Harlequin Books; Kate Duffy, editorial director of Kensington Books; Christine Zika, senior editor at Berkley Publishing; Monique Patterson, acquiring editor for St. Martin's Press; Lucia Macro, executive editor at Morrow/Avon; Jessica Faust, co-founder of Bookends literary agency; Annelise Robey of the Jane Rotrosen Agency; Miriam Kriss of the Irene Goodman Literary Agency; and Jennifer Jackson of the Donald Maass Literary Agency. The topics covered everything from industry trends to pet peeves.
"I just hate bad writing," Duffy said. "I don't know why people don't understand that."
Faust expressed her dismay about writers who don't do even the most basic kind of research. "Someone once pitched me a book in which someone hired a serial killer to kill someone," Faust said. "You don't hire a serial killer. They do that on their own."
