|J. C. Wilder: Shameless|

Sexy? Sizzling? Supernatural?
All the above and several more.
The third book in Wilder's Shadow Dweller series, Shameless rates as my favorite to date. Could the reason be that I cherish a fondness for cats, and the shapeshifter hero's alternate body form belongs to the feline family? Possibly. However, I would rather lay odds on the excellent writing, the depth of character, and the originality of plot. Although some knowledge of the first two books in the series helps to understand the Shadow Dwellers and their history, this book stands alone quite well.
A were-cat, Fayne, the hero, turns into a cougar under the full moon. Erihn, the romance novelist heroine, found an old book purporting to be a diary of a were-cat. She used it as the basis for her last book and for a sequel still in the planning stages, but not for a minute does she suspect it might be literally true. Kidnapped, sexually abused and disfigured earlier in her life, Erihn's own romantic life doesn't exist until she goes to a friend's isolated house in the Colorado mountains to plot the new book. Fayne resides, for the moment, in the basement apartment. Their meeting gives new meaning to "wow."
As all good plots should, this one thrives on complications. A vampire, evil and power hungry, wants the old diary and employs subterfuge and sundry heinous means to get his hands on it. And he savors the thought of destroying Fayne in the process. Erihn's enemy, a mortal, follows his own agenda. Obsessed and determined, this human monster will stop at nothing.
Add in Fayne's immortality and Erihn's lack of same, and the possibility of any long-term relationship seems nil. Will the romance survive? Will the hero and heroine? Will the reader?
A great book, Shameless guarantees to warm you on a cold winter night as well as give you a great read.
